6 Quality Tests To Verify Virgin Human Hair Before You Buy

How to test virgin hair quality: shedding, washing, tangle, dyeing, restyle and burning tests.

Descriptions are free; tests are not. Before committing to a bulk order of virgin human hair, run these six simple tests on a sample of the exact batch you plan to buy. None needs a laboratory - just water, a comb, a lighter and attention. Together they separate genuine virgin hair from processed or blended hair within an hour.

1. The Shedding Test

Comb the sample gently from ends to roots, then run your fingers through it several times. A few loose strands are normal; clumps of hair, or strands pulling out from the weft under light tension, are not. Then turn the weft over and press along the stitching - quality wefts hold firmly with no visible gaps.

2. The Wash Test

Wash the sample with mild shampoo and lukewarm water, then let it air dry. Genuine virgin hair comes out of the wash soft and manageable. Hair that was coated with silicone to look smooth often feels drier or rougher after washing, because the coating was hiding the true condition of the cuticle.

3. The Tangle Test

Wear or hang the washed, dried sample for a day or two of normal handling, then comb it again. Aligned cuticles let the comb glide; mixed or stripped cuticles grab, especially near the ends. Some texture-dependent friction is normal for curly patterns - what you are checking for is matting that worsens instead of settling.

4. The Dye Test

Virgin hair lifts and takes color evenly because the cuticle is intact and the hair has never been processed. Take a few strands and apply a light color treatment: even, predictable results indicate unprocessed hair, while patchy absorption or immediate damage suggests prior chemical treatment that the seller did not disclose.

5. The Restyle (Heat) Test

Apply moderate heat with a flat iron or curling wand, with a heat protectant. Virgin hair restyles and holds a new pattern, then returns to softness after washing. Hair that smells burnt, frizzes permanently or loses all structure after one pass of heat has usually been chemically treated or blended with fiber.

6. The Burn Test

Cut two or three strands and burn them over a safe surface. Real human hair burns to a fine ash with the smell of burned protein, like hair from a head. Synthetic fiber melts into a hard ball with a plastic smell. This test confirms human hair - combined with the other five, it confirms quality.
